Is your Vizio TV turned on, but the screen is completely black? You can hear the sound of your favorite show, but you cannot see the picture! This is a very common problem known as the "Black Screen of Death."
Before you panic or call an expensive TV repair technician, take a deep breath. In most cases, you can fix this issue yourself at home in just a few minutes.
Here are the easiest and most effective solutions to fix the Vizio TV black screen issue.
This is the easiest fix and it works 80% of the time. Sometimes, your TV just needs a quick restart to clear out temporary bugs.
Unplug your TV directly from the wall power outlet.
Leave it unplugged for a full 60 seconds. (Do not rush this part!)
While it is unplugged, find the physical power button on the TV itself (usually on the back or bottom edge) and press and hold it for 30 seconds. This drains any leftover power from the TV.
Plug the TV back into the wall and turn it on.
Sometimes, the TV screen is actually working, but the backlight (the lights inside the TV that make the picture bright) is broken.
Turn on your TV and make sure a show or movie is playing (even if you can only hear it).
Take a strong flashlight (or use your phone's flashlight) and point it very close to the TV screen.
Look closely at the screen where the light is shining.
Result: If you can faintly see the picture moving under the flashlight, your TV's "backlight" is broken. You will likely need to order replacement LED strips or contact a repair shop. If you see absolutely nothing, move to the next step.
Many Vizio TVs have a special feature called "Mute Screen" or "Blank Screen." People often press this button on their remote by accident! This feature turns off the picture but keeps the sound playing (perfect for listening to music).
How to fix it: Simply press and hold the Mute button on your Vizio remote for 3 to 5 seconds. If that does not work, try pressing any other button (like Volume Up or the Menu button) to wake the screen up.
A loose or damaged cable can easily cause a black screen.
Check the back of your TV and make sure the HDMI cable is plugged in tightly.
Check the other end of the cable (connected to your cable box, PlayStation, or Roku).
Try unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it into a different HDMI port on your TV.
If the cable looks old or broken, try using a new one.
If nothing else is working, a factory reset will erase everything and return the TV to its original settings. Since you cannot see the screen, you have to do this "blindly" using the buttons on the TV.
Turn the TV on.
Find the buttons on the back or side of the TV.
Press and hold the Input button and the Volume Down button at the same time for about 10-15 seconds.
A banner should pop up (if your screen partially works) telling you how to reset. If the screen is totally black, next press and hold the Input button alone for 10 seconds.
The TV should restart and reset itself.
1. Why does my Vizio TV have sound but no picture? This usually happens because of a temporary software glitch, a loose HDMI cable, or a broken backlight inside the TV. Doing a "Soft Power Cycle" or checking the cables usually fixes it.
2. Is it worth fixing a broken TV backlight? If your TV is relatively new or a large model, fixing the backlight is much cheaper than buying a whole new TV. The LED strips are inexpensive, but you may need a professional to install them safely.
3. What if my TV has a black screen and no sound? If there is no picture and no sound, check if the TV's power light is on. If there is no power light, the power board inside the TV might be broken, or your wall outlet might not be working. Try plugging the TV into a different room first to test it.
